Does it turn on when I open the mailbox door?
No — and that's intentional. The light is controlled by a dusk sensor, not the door. It turns on automatically at dark and stays on through the night, so your mailbox is already lit before you reach for the handle.
How long does the battery last before it needs replacing?
The rechargeable NiMH battery is rated for thousands of charge/discharge cycles — a minimum of 5 years under normal use. When it eventually does need replacing, it's a standard rechargeable battery available at most stores.
Does it work in winter and bad weather?
Yes, year-round. Two things to note: snow on the solar panel needs to be cleared off to charge, and during shorter winter days or stretches of heavy cloud cover, the light may not stay on the entire night.
Will the light blind me when I open the mailbox?
No. The LED is angled downward and tuned to a brightness level designed specifically for illuminating the mailbox interior — bright enough to see your mail, not bright enough to dazzle you.
Does installation really require a drill?
Yes. A 7/32" hole is drilled through the top of the mailbox to mount the unit. This is what makes it permanent — unlike adhesive or magnetic mailbox lights that fall off over time. If you're not comfortable with a drill, any handyman can complete the install in under 20 minutes.
Will the magnets damage credit cards?
No. The product contains no magnets and won't damage anything in your mail.
